5.0 out of 5 stars 350wpm-1500wpm in Six Months. Newly discovered literacy., August 29, 2003

A Kid’s Review

…

It’s hard to call what this book teaches “rapid reading.” That phrase makes it sound exotic and unreachable. I truly believe after reading this that everyday people can learn to read at 1000+ words per minute with excellent retention.

I first read this as a 20-year-old college student. With it, I learned to clock my reading rate at 350 words-per-minute. Like most people, I read from left-to-right in “rows of corn,” sub-vocalizing. Although extremely bright, I never really could enjoy extensive reading. Doing it for school was a chore.

I tried all sorts of methods for taking notes on books. I tried a tape recorder. I tried writing in the margins. I tried post-it-notes. I tried marking page sections and writing notes longhand in a separate notebook. I tried typing at my computer as I read. I’d end up with sometimes dozens of pages of notes and outlines yet not feel like I could discuss the text fluently.

This book teaches how to process text differently. Now, I relax my eyes and ideas simply flow from the words. A page in a book is no longer like a step ladder or rows of corn — but it is like a sculpture. As a pianist, I can say that reading text for me has become like reading music. Just as I can see a sheet of music and gain an idea of the song, I can look at a written page and see ideas. Every author has a rhythm and style.

After extensive and sometimes frustrating practice, based on techniques in this book, my understanding of text has completely changed. I am much more able to understand an author’s central themes. Whereas before it seemed I could only think on a scale of words and sentences, now I can easily think on a scale of sections and chapters. I have much better judgement in taking notes and feel able to discuss books that I read much more fluently. Books that might have taken me 15 hours to read before now comfortably take 3 or 4.

I am now able to actually enjoy reading fiction. It’s more like listening to a new peice of music now than forcing myself to plow through a haystack of text line-by-line and inch-by-inch. Literacy education truly needs to incorporate methods of visual reading. My only regret about this book was that I realized I hadn’t been fully taught to read before!

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Home-Study Course, July 25, 2000

By John Noodles (A Field in ND, USA) – See all my reviews

This is probably the best book that I’ve read on speed reading. In an earlier review, I suggested that Zorn’s book, “Speed Reading,” was the best. It is indeed a fine book. Kump’s book, however, give a more realistic idea of the kind of work it takes to boost your reading speed. Other books give a smattering of exercises–often very good ones–without emphasizing the kind of practice that is necessary, or even that you won’t necessarily be able to maintain high speeds across all types of reading material.

Kump uses familiar reading exercises, and variations on them. The lessons are brief, and each lesson contains short (10-15 minutes) exercises; at the end of each lesson, you are instructed to do a series of drills. Kump wants you to spend about a week on each series of drills, and to repeat them every day. They can take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour or more a day, depending on how much time you are willing to spend. I’ve found most–but not all–drills useful. The ones that were not useful to me drilled on skills I already had (recognizing levels of specificity within paragraphs, for instance).

Here’s an example of one particularly useful drill. Kump has you read for 2 minutes, as fast as you can with comprehension. Then you read the same material again, trying to read a little faster, and a little further, in the same amount of time. And again. You do this four times. A variation of this is to read for 1 minute, then a little faster for another minute, and then to “practice read” (i.e., move your eyes quickly across the words, without worrying about comprehension) twice the longest passage in the same amount of time. Then you practice read three times the original (that is, the longest of the first two 1-minute drills) in one minute.

One REALLY nice thing about this book is that Kump has you use your own reading material, your own books. Other books include selections for you to practice with, most of which are tedious, simplistic, or just too brief. Kump’s exercises work, and you can read your own books while you practice.

Product Description

A previous National Director of Education for Evelyn Wood Reading Dynamics presents his do-it-yourself program for increasing reading speed and boosting comprehension.

“Speed reading is one of the truly useful educational ideas of the last few years, and this book can be the least expensive and most efficient way you can learn it.” –William Proxmire, United States Senator

The perfect answer to today’s information explosion, Peter Kump’s rapid reading method has already helped thousands of people to read up to eight times faster, with better concentration and retention.

Speed Reading and Comprehension

Comprehension is the ability to know about something, having the power to grasp the idea and the capacity to perceive or understand something.
It is one of the most important things you should take onto consideration while reading.

Stop for a moment and ask yourself!
While reading, do you actually understand as to what you read? Are you able to comprehend what material you are going through? Understanding the content of the text is very important. Otherwise if you just read and not understand anything, you have totally wasted your time.

Comprehension has vital importance. In fact it is the essence of reading!
Comprehending while you read will only help you to construct the meaning out of the written material. Otherwise just reading through is of no use.

Some people may take a lot of time in reading but they do comprehend the entire content. And some people take minutes to read a whole a book and do not even remember the context of the book!

On the other hand some people may read up to hundreds of words within a minute and finish the entire book and actually remember the whole context present in the book!
This is when they combine speed reading and comprehensive reading together and apply it. When you combine both the things together cleverly then only you are able to work your way out through the maze of comprehension and time.

There are many ways to help you in this matter. You can read faster and also in a comprehensive manner.
Tips may include for instance choosing a comfort level before you start reading. You may sit, lean, stand or lie. Get rid of all sorts of things that you think maybe the sources or causes of distractions for you while doing so (like turning off the TV, Music Player, Radio etc.) In this way your mind will be totally focused and you will be able to concentrate even better.

You can also enhance your speed while comprehending the written material by skimming out the context. Just by going through the content and get the basic ideas what the additional phrases are referring to and in this way you will be able to complete your reading before your actual reading time.

And in no time while enhancing your speed and comprehensive reading abilities you will also be able to understand the depth of the relationship and the connection between comprehension and speed reading.

Speed Reading Tactics

Recently, there was a visitor to my site who had left me an interesting question. He wanted to know how could I actually move from saying the words and identify the symbols. This is actually one of the most difficult habits to overcome in developing the skill of speed reading. This question I was asked demonstrates towards the method of sub-vocalization. For your knowledge sub-vocalization is referred to the act of seeing the words or phrases and saying them in your mind, and hear the words in your voice and lastly understanding their meanings. This process, as I have told you consists of four steps. In the context of this process, reading is referred to getting the meanings from the written content which is seeing them and getting the idea of the printed material. In theoretical terms, reading should consist of just two steps. In my discussion below I will tell you about the seven tips you may use to overcome sub-vocalization.

Tip One – The first tip is concerned with the moving of eyes. The eyes need to move fluidly and rapidly to go through the content. Usually the training programs for speed reading begin with physical training of eye. This is a reason why speed reading is often criticized by many. But it is in fact, very important to begin with as the eyes are mechanics in reading. This training of eyes is to make them move fluidly and not stuck on a single phrase or word to be able to go through the print faster. In the beginning, seeing the words faster can be very uncomfortable. But it should be realized that you are going to bring major changes in your process of perceiving the material while staying much focused.

Tip Two: You must work on increasing your speed rate of reading higher than 600 words per minute because sub-vocalization is likely to appear in a word count below this figure. The nervous system of brain can be stimulated easily by breaking the habit of sub-vocalization. However, it requires fast practice and brings a little un-comfort in the beginning. It is similar to the example of driving a car. You start off with a lower speed say that of 30 km/h and then you start getting control over the speed of the car and push the race to accelerate further and go up to 80km/h. Training of brain and eyes to be able to understand at different speed rates is an important factor of speed reading.

Tip Three: While you are reading you must try to focus on the content and know what it is about. You should not just focus on avoiding sub-vocalization. Thinking about the print infront of you will make you read the material better.

Tip Four: Seeing content quickly a number of times makes enough understanding and also will make you recognize what you have read before. This way you will be able to come up with a comprehension on your own, thus better understanding by using multiple rapid exposures.

Tip Five: You will be benefited if you ask yourself questions about the material you are passing over as questions have a powerful impact on one’s mind.
Tip Six: Consider monitoring your thinking if you can’t think straight about the material you are reading. If you can’t respond to what you are reading then observe what else are you thinking and ask yourself what is it about?

Tip Seven: There is no alternative for practicing these tips. The more you practice the quicker you proceed to becoming the master of speed reading.
